A colour-coded system is nothing new. It is common in a lot of situations. Stop signs everywhere are always red. Yellow often indicates caution, as with your “wet floor” signs or yellow traffic lights. We are wired to recognize colors and symbols, and these can keep us safe. There is no legal requirement to use a colour-coded cleaning system, however, everyone is responsible for risk assessment and prevention or control of exposure to micro-organisms.

In the janitorial industry, the value of colour-coded cleaning systems cannot be underestimated. The colour-coded cleaning is a simple but important step that will make a huge impact on hygiene standards and the elimination of cross-contamination from one cleaning area or surface to another. It is vital that a system forms part of our cleaning processes.

A color-coded cleaning system increases the efficiency of your team, reduces your costs, and improves results. Why? This system eliminates language differences, reduces the chance of cross-contamination during the cleaning process, makes training easier, saves time, minimizes mistakes, easier supply tracking, and you can adapt it to your needs.

A typical arrangement for colour-coded cleaning looks like this:

Red is for areas with a higher risk of contamination, such as bathrooms, toilets, urinals, washrooms, showers, bathtubs, bathroom floors, and similar areas Yellow requires a cautious approach, so you would use yellow to clean bathroom sinks, counters, soap dispensers

Blue is your all-purpose color. Blue is for general dusting, windows, desks, hallway floors, reception areas, and similar surfaces Green is typically reserved for food preparation and consumption surfaces like kitchens, bars, break room microwaves, and kitchen counters.

You can also use this color-coding across tools, including buckets and mop buckets, mop heads and handles, brooms and brushes, microfiber cloths, dustpans, and brushes.

Overall, it’s important for any business to adhere to strict cleaning guidelines and we feel that colour-coded cleaning is the way to ensure this.
